The download sales tool DLGuard has been helping website owners for several years to integrate a fully-functional shopping cart on their websites. This DLGuard review focuses on using it in the context of an ebook business where it is preferable to completely automate the selling and distribution of PDF files with zero intervention from the site owner.
I started using DLGuard two years ago after writing ebooks to distribute online. The DLGuard reviews at the time made it clear how easy it was to install and set up an inventory so I gave it a try.
The shopping cart element of the software is trivial to install on your server, as is configuring your inventory of ebooks to sell. It will take a little more time to re-design the checkout web pages, but this is optional and only needed if you want them to match your site design.
Where it comes into itself is after payment processing is completed (notably it is able to integrate/communicate with Paypal, PayDotCom and several other processors). The application auto-responds to the customer by email with a unique download link to their ebook.
Securing the download link is critical to protecting your ebook business and DLGuard takes two approaches to this. First by putting a cap on the number of downloads that can be made from the link and, secondly, making the link time-out after a set period. This curtails the vast majority of hacks that could really scupper your sales.
As a basic shopping cart DLGuard has all the standard functionality you’d expect (money-off coupon support, multi-item sales, payment processing). Its ability to streamline the ebook distribution means that after setting up the system it requires little in the way of intervention by the website owner. The sales reports and customer tracking also provide an invaluable mailing list which, when combined with promotional coupon offers, are a powerful means of cross-selling your ebooks.
